Drugs & Alcohol: Cool or Fool?

The word drug is trending all over news channels and social media. Thus, naturally catches our attention towards it. No doubt, consumption of drugs and weeds are prohibited by law yet, we witness it as a big youth problem.

Hence, today we will reflect on:

  • Reasons for youth to consume these obnoxious stuffs.
  • It’s effect on health.
  • Prevention /solutions.

Why Drugs & Alcohol?

We believe to solve any problem, it’s necessary to know the root cause of it. And what could be better than a survey?

Hence, we did a survey in which 112 people participated.

They were asked about their reason of consumption of drugs, alcohol and cigarettes to which reason came out as follows:

  • Depression or Stress

Around 40% people mentioned depression or stress as their reason to drink, smoke or consume such things in other forms.

Depression is one of the major problem that youth is suffering today. Lack of family support, failure or stress in career, peer pressure and lack of real friend who can talk, understand and guide pushes them into the world of drug, alcohol and cigarettes.

  • Just find it cool

In world full of insta stories and fake dramas, celebrations are no more complete without saying “cheers”. Around 20% alcoholic, chain smokers and drugist say, they do so to appear cool among pals.

But, little do they know, they are harming their lives. How? Let’s see next reason.

  • Addiction

Around 30% of people in survey say that they started consumption as ‘once in a while’ due to friend’s pressure or for fun but now are addicted to it.

They said, they can’t go to rehabilitation center as they fear sharing it with their family. Some of them have started facing kidney issues in the young age itself.

  • Heartbreak and Others

Mujhe pine ka Sauk nahi.. Peeta hun gum bhulane ko!

The lines remind us of some heartbroken lovers tending to know Kabir Singh. But, let me warn them, this won’t help them get their Peeti back. Instead, it will only burn a hole in their pocket and drop them into the sea of addiction and insecure future.

Will you recommend it to others?

73% of people admitted that they regret consuming these stuffs and won’t suggest it to others. While, 27% people feel like suggesting it to others.

Does youth considers it’s effect on health?

Perhaps, the answer is no. Today, youth is educated yet, they do not care about the effects of these things upon their health. This negligence will surely cause a problem today and tomorrow. Let’s have a look on these effects:

  • Alcohol causes severe damage to kidneys and liver.
  • Smoking causes respiratory problems and several fatal issues like lung cancer.
  • Consumption of drug can lead to a person’s death or can cause serious mental issues.
  • Over long period of time, consumption of these stuffs can lead to chronic disease like high blood pressure, strokes, liver problem and digestion problem.

Precaution & Cures

  1. If you are a parent, please don’t use voilence to stop your child. Instead, try to understand the reason behind their consumption and help them accordingly.
  2. As a youth, you need to understand the difference between cool & fool. Don’t do this under peer pressure.
  3. Be a guard of your own and stay firm at your decision.
  4. If you are already a chain smoker or drinker, no worries. Slowly, bring down your consumption graph. Give up one peg and 2 cigarettes per day for first month. Then, cut down a larger amount next month. Continue cutting it down gradually till you acheive your goals.
  5. Take help of chewel gums available in the market to get get rid of tobacco and cigarette addiction.
  6. If you are dealing with drugs, visit the nearest rehabilitation center and seek proffesional help. Remember, consuming it can tarnish your life.
  7. Don’t fear seeking help from your parents. Tell them that you need their help in leaving this addiction.
  8. At last, don’t fall prey to fake social media life. Apple juice looks almost the same! Your body is God’s best gift to you. Take proper care of it.

Men & Mental Health

The male dominance in society has not only done partiality with women but has also worsen the lives of millions of men out there in some way or the other.
The constant pressure of “staying strong” or “man up” has ensued inability to express their feelings or asking need of help or support. In the changing society, where we talk about equality of all genders, ironically, losing from a woman is still considered a matter of shame! Since early day, they are expected to never fall down, not to pursue a passion different from league, be the boss of their family and worst of all not to have much emotions. The judgement of men’s success and character from their salary and job is as common as judgement of a girl on basis of her looks and dressing. Summing the complete paragraph in one line, men are considered as ROBOTS that can never face any technical error.
In case of any failure, the mental trauma that they go through is inexpressible in words because they have nobody to talk about it. The terms like chakka, hizra, namard, biwi ka gulam and many more are often used for those who do not fit into the cage society has made for them. These terms not only stops them from being who they actually are but also breaks their confidence and undoubtedly hurts their self-respect.
The consequences are 34.8% men suffer hypertension and the percentage increases to 44% with men aged more than 60. Around 21% men around us are battling depression, sadly all alone.
To everyone out there, please stop judging men for all the factors that u do till today. Please stop bullying them in anyway.
And to all the the men out there: you too can show emotions, you too can fail sometimes, you too can lose from a women, you can have low salary but full right on your respect, you too can dance, sing or act or cook, you too can take care of urself and ur skin, you too can be different from world expects you to be. You aren’t born to fit into their cage but to live your life the way you want. You are human and you don’t need to be a robot.

THE 3 A.M. SCHEDULE: YOUTH HEALTH

Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” This nursery rhyme that we all had recited at a point in life isn’t just two lines but the secret of a healthy body and mind.

But as we grew up, the world around us changed a lot. Computers and mobile phones entered into our life replacing the kites and bats and schedule of sleeping around ten shifted to three in the morning.

But have you ever wondered what differences did this new schedule brought in our life and how does it impacts our health?

Well, if not then you must as this is the reason of many health problems directly or indirectly.

First things first.

Less sleep duration:

Human body needs proper sleep for 7-8 hours everyday but with this new sleep cycle that need of the body remains unfulfilled. Even if u wake up late in the morning, that isn’t enough to cover the loss of night. The reason is dark and light. At night, there is darkness and body produces melatonin that reaches to the brain and asks it to rest. Thus, the brain and body comes to rest and at non-alert mode. But in day time, when there is light around, melatonin is not produced and brain remains active. This not only causes depression, anxiety, insomania and several neuro problems but has also been linked to obesity, breast and prostrate cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

No excercise or meditation:

Secondly, in earlier times, every work required man power keeping humans excercised and fit. But today, all those things have been replaced by machines and only excercise that our body gets is through morning walks, yoga and gyms. But if we sleep at 3 a.m, we obviously miss our morning walks and cogitation and refrain our body from fresh air and required excercise. These excercises are not just important for fitness of our body but also mind as cogitation and fresh air walk helps mind to relax and prepares it for upcoming day. Refraining body from such vital needs has resulted in obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and irritability.

Disturbed food routine:

The third affect of staying up late at night is related to stomach. What we eat and when we eat affects our digestive system. Doctors suggest that we should take heavy breakfast as that’s the first meal after a long break, lunch should be lighter than breakfast and dinner should be the lightest meal of the day. But now, with this new emerging schedule, we have started skipping the most important meal of the day, the breakfast and have combined it with lunch and made brunch. Great name but not great affects. Also, a new habit is seen among youngsters. The habit of keeping on eating heavy meals like cheesy sandwiches, pizzas, chips and chocolates at midnight. And not to be forgotten, the body starts it’s digestion process while we sleep. After disturbing the complete food routine what more can be expected than the fact that 22% Indians are suffering constipation and 31.3% people are suffering obesity.

Effect on eyes:

The last and most usual impact of staying up late at night is on eyes. Most people use mobile phones at night that directly affects their eyes by it’s light.

Thus, if you want to stay pink in health please focus on your sleep cycle. Sleep well and stay healthy.

HAS LOCKDOWN FRUSTRATED YOU TOO?

On 14th March, unexpectedly a message popped up on my phone. It was the announcement of no classes between 15th March to 30th March from my college.
I started planning my schedule to study as I thought it would be great time to prepare for my upcoming examination and complete all my projects.

The next thing I knew was a call from my flatmate’s father, my uncle, asking me to come back with her as things might worsen in upcoming days. I also had a call from my father asking if I want to come back home. Going back to home meant, no studies as carrying much luggage was a complete no no and so I decided to stay here and hence, my flatmate left. Also my friends were staying at that time so I didn’t feel anything.

The things changed suddenly when a 14 hour public curfew was employed and as it finished many states like Delhi and Maharashtra were completely locked down. It gave us a clear idea that things are not going to end on 30th and will last longer.

How longer?? We didn’t know.

I clearly remember, my best friend Arnab called me saying his all flatmates and friends are leaving & so he will also be going back to his hometown and I should also go back to my home or else I will be left here all alone and get bored.

I got my train tickets booked for 25th midnight 12a.m. and his flight was scheduled at 10 a.m.

Arnab shares a very close bond with his home. In the last three years, no hostel or flat has been able to give him that homely vibe and thus, as always, he was excited to go and meet his family.
But alas! My train got cancelled at last moment due to lockdown and he flew off.

The initial days were very jolly for him. The unexpected happiness, the joy of meeting his family and excitement for upcoming birthday, all of these added to his contentment.

But as days passed by, this joy was replaced by frustration and anxiousness. He wanted to step out of his house, meet his friends, enjoy eating at cafes, watch movies and do everything he used to do when covid-19 was not a name. Things had completely changed now and he was unable to adapt with this pain of being caged in his own house.

As time passed by, this anxiety grew bigger day by day and no later it started impacting our conversation and his health. Many big and small things started hurting him and our conversation became invective with each passing day. He started getting panic attacks and many a times, his blood pressure flactuated and he sweated like anything.The raising numbers and menacing headlines on news channels added to his dejection. All he wanted was to step out and see the world as it used to be.

Both of us soon understood, we need to work on this lockdown side effect or else we will endup losing our mental health.

I am sure many of you are able to relate to this frustration and anxiousness. The feeling of being caught in a situation that we had never even imagined is horrible.

There is well known proverb in Hindi “Khali dimag saitan ka Ghar” which means an ideal mind becomes workshop for devil and hence, we decided to keep ourselves busy as much as possible.

HOW TO PREVENT DEPRESSION & ANXIETY IN LOCKDOWN?

  • EXERCISES:

We found it the right time to invest in our body and started exercising in our room itself.
A continuous walk during the morning hours on terrace for complete one hour followed by some stretching exercises, some push-ups and fifteen minutes of meditation were enough to release ample amount of endorphin to trigger the feeling of freshness and positivity in us.

  • DANCE:

Remember the school days when dance floors and pubs weren’t a thing and we used to hit the floors in our bedroom or drawing halls? Rehearsing for upcoming school event was such a fun then. Some of us did the complete choreography without beats by singing lyrics ourself, didn’t we?

I thought of living those moments again through songs played my phone and practiced some dance steps whenever I wished to. Though, I am not a great dancer but I always enjoy dancing and learning new dance forms.

YouTube came to a great help when I searched dance tutorials for Bihu and Bharatanatyam. They have such a great choreography that provides simple and easy yet elegant dance steps.

  • READING BOOKS:

Reading is not only a wise investment of time but also a way to travel into a world very different from where we physically are. It changes our dogmatic approach towards life to an unbiased and unprejudiced way of accepting things that comes into our way.

We read some good books of different types, from spiritual to romantic and philosophical to suspicious. It not only proved to be a great decision but has also broadened our thoughts and imaginative power.

  • MUSIC

Music not only gives relief to our soul but also takes us on a short walk to a different world. It can be a good mood changer when you are feeling low. We tuned into to our favorite tracks everyday.

Start your day with some energtic songs and doze off with a sweet melody at night. Remember, your taste of music is based on your personality. Never change your playlist to impress others.

  • SEARCH FOR YOUR HOBBIES:

We all have something that we love to do, but we don’t start doing it due to laziness. Search your hobbies and give a start. Paint your imagination or cook your favorite dish or play your favorite instrument. How about sitting again with your siblings and playing carrom, chess or ludo?

  • WEBINARS AND ONLINE CLASSES

It’s a perfect time to learn something new. Be it a traditional dish from your mom’s kitchen or links of webinars in WhatsApp group or some online courses that you wanted to do since long but couldn’t find time for it. Invest your time wisely. Take this time as a gift and give yourself the best.

WHAT NOT TO DO:

Avoid negativity on social media as it hampers more than anything else.

Stop comparing. We all know that this isn’t going to end soon so it’s better to adapt with this new normal.

Avoid looking at the darker side. I agree that it has done much harm to everyone but it is a fact that we can’t undo it. Look at the positive aspects, the way you can use it for your growth, hear the chirping birds and have patience.
